Is Hypermiling Dangerous?

Since I learned about Hypermiling several months ago, I have been reading a lot more stories that suggest the Hypermiling is dangerous and that Hypermilers are a bunch of quacks out on the road that are putting themselves and other drivers in danger. I would like to offer my opinion on this point of view.

I don't believe the basic hypermiling techniques are dangerous, I use the basic techniques every day driving to and from work. What hypermiling is, is driving with common sense, you know the kind of common sense you had when you first got your drivers license; the one that told you that if you went 5 miles over the speed limit, that you would get pulled over.

Hypermiling is also about taking your foot off of the gas pedal and not racing from stop light to stop light slamming on your breaks because the light has not yet turned green. Driving the speed limit is another technique of hypermiling; this helps increase your gas mileage because every car has a "sweet spot" between 45 and 55 miles per hour where your vehicle will get the best gas mileage; all you need to do is find it.

Another hypermiling technique is to coasting; this means that when you are going down an incline, take your foot off of the gas pedal, and give the engine just enough gas to make up the next incline. Not too hard is it? Stop tailgating is another way to increase your gas mileage; what do tailgaters constantly do? They hit their break pedal to slow down so that they can change lanes to speed up and then slam on their breaks trying to make it through that yellow light.

These are just some of the basic techniques that Hypermilers use to increase their gas mileage and save money at the pump. Nothing I have described is dangerous to you or other drivers on the road. If anything, Hypermiling will have you driving slower and gentler because you are not speeding and tailgating and you are watching other drivers. Imagine if we all started to Hypermile, the roads would be a much gentler place to drive and maybe the gas prices would actually fall, because there is not so great a demand.
